Freddie At
The Track:
Sunnyvale, CA - ... I have been either in the right place at the
right time and / or fortunate enough to have not only met key racing
identities, but then welcomed and invited to selected NASCAR Winston
Cup events, which were much more relaxed and intimate than an
official, high-pressured, Winston Cup Race. I would like to share
both my insight and experience at one of these events. A view
from a young black upcoming driver.....the next generation of
drivers. NASCAR Winston Cup has been seen as a fraternity of "Good Ole
Boys." It is the fastest growing spectator sport in
America and much is due to its family oriented appeal. The
grass roots of NASCAR is the South. "The Mecca of
NASCAR" is Charlotte, North Carolina. The sightings of
the confederate flag still being hoisted at venues is part of the
scene not only restricted to South Carolina. The people,
predominantly Anglo-Saxon, religious, wearing Dale Earnhardt paraphernalia,
and true race fanatics are part of the norm. That was not the
norm for ME! I
was invited to the NASCAR Winston Cup Ford Test Week at Lowe's
Motorspeedway in Charlotte, North Carolina. The invitation was
extended by NASCAR icon and owner of Winston Cup car #90 (Hills
Bros.), Junee Donlavey. Doc Watson, my boss, mentor, and part
owner of Watson-Green Motorsports and owner of Doc Watson
Motorsports arranged this week inside NASCAR...
...The week at NASCAR Ford Testing was extraordinary. I
met and received racing tips from some of the sport's greatest
contributors. I was accepted by this close knit community and
the issue of color was not even an issue. I am not naive to
think that everyone was happy with my presence there but as Junee
Donlavey a NASCAR icon with involvement over 50 years stated.
"When driving at 200 MPH...you can't tell what color the driver
is when he goes by."
Special Thanks to everyone who invited me inside NASCAR. See
you at the races.
